Cheap Spearguns

The pros and cons of buying cheap spearguns

Some may consider a spearguns to be expensive purchase, and rightly so. Spearguns can set you back hundreds of dollars, or even cost over a thousand dollars in some cases. Knowing the type of gun that will suit you and your type of fishing conditions will determine the type of speargun you need and thus how much you need to spend. So should someone even consider a cheap speargun? Well that depends on a few variables, I hope you will find the answer to that question after reading this page.

Cheap spearguns are rubbish! Or are they?
I have often heard it said that a cheap speargun is just a piece of junk that could break or fall apart at any moment, some go as far as saying a cheap gun won't even work properly from day one. While the saying is true “you get what you pay for” sometimes just sometimes you can find a real treasure in the bargain bin. One good example is the Cressi Comanche Speargun, the Comanche was the 2004 world champion speargun, today you pick up a Comanche for under $150, which is very cheap for a quality speargun. There are other examples of treasures like this and there are many good cheap spearguns for under $200.

Are cheap spearguns really worth the risk?
Yes and no. You will need to do your research, some cheap spearguns are just nasty and will not function the way you want or need them to. Do your homework and find out which cheap spearguns are good and which ones are bad. A good place to start this research is looking at some speargun reviews for cheaper guns.

The difference between a sub $200 speargun and an $800 gun can be brand name and frills, some of these more expensive guns have the same or similar materials and craftsmanship as the cheaper guns. This is not true in every case but it certainly is true some of the time. Cheap spearguns are a way to save money when outfitting for spearfishing. There is a lot of gear to buy when outfitting for spearfishing including, wetsuit, fins, mask, snorkel, weight belt, bags, floats etc. It is possible that the money saved buying a cheap speargun could even buy the rest of your spearfishing gear! That would be nice.

I hope that some of the fear associated with cheap spearguns have now been addressed. In summary we are all individuals, the speargun I like might not be best suited to you and your style of spearfishing. If possible take the time to try out different spearguns from different price ranges and find out what works best for you.
